Some nights in Puerto Vallarta are remembered by their scent before their sights. Copal in the air, marigold petals underfoot and the Pacific glowing orange as a candle flickers between two hands. This is how Day of the Dead is lived in this port town: a celebration of memory that, facing the sea, also becomes a celebration of love.
In 2026, Puerto Vallarta hosts the Festival of Souls (Festival de las Almas), Jalisco’s great Day of the Dead celebration, and it is the only oceanfront destination among the eleven participating municipalities. Here is what’s happening this year and how to experience it as a couple, at your own pace.

Day of the Dead 2026 Dates in Puerto Vallarta
The official Festival of Souls program in Puerto Vallarta runs from Saturday, October 31 to Monday, November 2, 2026, with more than 28 free experiences on the Malecón, in the Historic Downtown, on the Playa Los Muertos Pier and on Isla del Cuale. The core days of the tradition are November 1 and 2.
Since November 2 falls on a Monday, the calendar is perfect for a three-night getaway: arrive on Friday, enjoy the festival over the weekend and say goodbye to the bay on the final night of candles.
Five Festival Moments to Share as a Couple
The Golden Hour of Souls
Every evening at sunset, the Malecón gathers for a candle-lighting ritual (Hora Dorada de las Almas) that marks the passage from day to night. It is the most intimate moment of the festival: a shared candle, the sun sinking into Banderas Bay and the murmur of the sea as the only music. Arrive early to find a good spot by the water.
The Boats of Light and the Guardian of the Ocean
Flower-covered pangas (Pangas de Luz) will be set up along the Malecón in tribute to the port’s fishermen, lighting up at nightfall. Nearby, on the lighthouse esplanade, stands the Guardian of the Ocean (La Guardiana del Océano), Puerto Vallarta’s monumental Catrina, decorated this year with waves, whales, manta rays and bougainvillea. Strolling past them at night, hand in hand, is one of the most beautiful sights of the season.

The Last Threshold, to the Lighthouse of Souls
A path of flowers and light (El Último Umbral) leads to the Lighthouse of Souls (Faro de las Ánimas), at the end of the Playa Los Muertos Pier. Walking it together, with the ocean on both sides and the light guiding your steps, feels almost like a promise. It is the ideal way to end the night away from the crowds.
The Garden of Whispers on Isla del Cuale
Among trees and water, Isla del Cuale becomes a nighttime experience (Jardín de los Susurros) filled with copal, candles, shadows and local legends. It is an immersive pause, perfect for couples who prefer the sensory to the crowded.
Voices from the Balcony
Throughout the festival, short surprise concerts (Voces desde el Balcón) of five to ten minutes will ring out from balconies in the Historic Downtown. There is no announced schedule, so the best way to find them is to wander unhurried through the cobblestone streets.
A Musical Evening Before the Festival
If you arrive early, on Friday, October 30 at 9:00 p.m., the Vallarta Symphony Orchestra, the Choir of the Universidade de Brasília and Poder Coral present a Day of the Dead concert at the María Reina de la Paz Church in Marina Vallarta. The program culminates with John Rutter’s Requiem. A solemn, moving night to open the season as a couple. Tickets are available through the Instituto de Artes Musicales de Puerto Vallarta.
The Tide of Souls: The Grand Parade
The grand Day of the Dead parade (La Marea de las Ánimas) will wind through the city across five themed worlds, led by catrines and catrinas dressed in the style of old Vallarta. As of publication, the official date, time and route are yet to be confirmed, so we recommend checking with our concierge team when you arrive.

Experiencing Day of the Dead from Villa Premiere
Villa Premiere sits on Playa Camarones, in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, about a ten-minute walk from the Malecón. That proximity changes the experience: you can head out for the Golden Hour without a car and, when the night is over, return to the calm of an adults-only boutique hotel, away from the noise yet steps from the celebration.
Before or after the festival, book an oceanfront dinner at El Espigón, share a mezcal at La Perla or spend the next morning at the spa. Choose your ocean-view suite and browse our current offers to plan your Day of the Dead getaway.
Tips for Enjoying the Festival as a Couple
Get to the Malecón before sunset to experience the Golden Hour from the start. Wear comfortable shoes: several areas are best explored on foot. Catrina makeup is welcome in the festival’s public spaces, but if you visit the 5 de Diciembre Cemetery (Panteón 5 de Diciembre), please be respectful, as families gather there to honor their loved ones. Finally, confirm schedules on the official festival website, as programming may change.
